Pro-gun
The National Rifle Association (NRA) and other pro-gun advocates account for nearly twothirds of the American population. Supported by their powerful lobbyists in Washington, they think the Constitution should guarantee the right to bear arms. Whether it is because Americans grew up learning about Minutemen, the setting of the frontier or watching John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, the result is that most citizens believe they have the inalienable right to bear arms. Being a law-abiding citizen gives one the right to own a gun as it does a car, as a long as the owner respects the regulation. Pro-gun activists insist that education and training are the only keys to firearm safety and it is not in banning arms that the problem can be solved.
Anti-gun
According to many citizens against guns, the Founding Fathers were wise, but their vision of what was necessary in the 18th century rural America does not apply today.
In March 2000, a 6 year-old boy entered his school and shot a classmate with a gun he had taken from home. Although pro-gun advocates think that punishing the parent will send the message to all irresponsible gun-owners, anti-gun advocates say that you can’t rely on people being responsible. As a first step in the long campaign against arms, they think the government should make guns people-safe. But even a simple solution, like rendering childsafety locks mandatory, meets strong opposition from the NRA.
